A stubborn four-alarm blaze in the Weston Road and Jane area took several hours to be knocked down by Toronto Fire.
At its peak, flames stretched more than 20 feet above the shared roof of the two four story town houses – each building broken into 16 units.
Division Commander Bob O’Hallarn says the fire broke out at about 7:45 in the evening.
“It started in one unit and a lady, approximately 50 years of age, tried to extinguish it with a pot of water. She did get some slight burns herself and suffered a bit of smoke inhalation. She’s been taken to Humber Hospital for a precautionary checkup.”
O’Hallarn says as many as 100 people were forced from their homes. As to the cause of the blaze…
“That’s something we will hope to determine in our investigation. It was in one townhouse unit, and it got into the roof, and the common attics in some of them, and it quickly spread to other units, in the roof area, anyway.”
O’Hallarn says this fire is another example of the value of residential sprinklers, saying if the units had the systems installed, the fire probably would have been put out before the fire trucks arrived.
