OCEANSIDE — Oceanside firefighters say they can rest easier after City Council unanimously supported two ordinance amendments May 7 that will ensure homes larger than 5,000 square feet have fire sprinkler systems.
“Sprinklers do save lives,” said Jim Zicaro, chief building official for the city. “One sprinkler head has the ability to put out a fire when it starts.”
Prior to approval of the amendments, Oceanside was one of the few jurisdictions that did not have a single-family residence sprinkler ordinance said Mike Margot, Oceanside fire marshal.
Approved code amendments also call for smoke detectors and electrical services to meet standards set by SDG&E in buildings larger than 5,000 square feet.
City Manager Peter Weiss said the fire department conducted significant outreach to the building community to explain the amendments, but there were still some questions from builders during the council meeting about the effect the amendments have on construction in progress. City Attorney John Mullen said builders are subject to the codes that are active at the time their building permits are issued. All projects that get permits hereafter need to adhere to the new codes.
Margot said the new guidelines give the city a more common-sense approach to addressing fires.
