Fire officials continue to investigate what sparked a weekend blaze that left 20 people homeless.
Flames broke out around 1 a.m. Saturday at the Union Square Apartments off Houck Street. When firefighters arrived, the two-story apartment was fully engulfed. Captain Joey Duggan with the Sumter Fire Department says the building did not have a sprinkler system.
“Any large scale fire like this apartment complex is definitely a large fire for us. We try very hard in Sumter to make sure that people are properly educated about having working smoke detectors,” Duggan said.
A knock on the door startled Arminda Gomez and her family that morning. Her home was demolished by the blaze.
“I was scared because I have never seen a fire in front of my home before,” Gomez said.
Damages are estimated at a $500,000 and the Red Cross is currently helping the displaced families.
