BARTLETT — A firefighter and a resident were injured Thursday night after a fire started on a propane grill during a cookout on a backyard deck. Flames spread to the building and caused an estimated $300,000 damage to four townhome units.
One firefighter was transported to Sherman Hospital in Elgin for injuries that were not life-threatening, and one civilian was treated and released at the scene, according to a Bartlett Fire Protection District release.
A Bartlett police officer said early Friday that the side of the townhome caught fire after a fire from a grill spread. The blaze, which was reported about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, then spread to an adjoining home. The fire protection district said the six-unit building was at 477 Railroad Ave.
Fire officials said a residential sprinkler system in the building activated in the unit where the fire originated.
Bartlett fire officials said the fire was escalated to a box alarm, with assistance coming from Hanover Park, Streamwood, Elgin, South Elgin and Carol Stream both to assist at the scene and to provide coverage for Bartlett’s two fire stations during the blaze.
The fire was declared under control by about 8 p.m., although fire crews remained on the scene until 11 p.m. Two of the four damaged townhome units in the building were rendered uninhabitable, according to the fire district.
