A sprinkler system helped prevent extensive damage to a Wilmington Apartment complex.
Fire Fighters were called to the Towne Estate complex because of the smell of smoke.
When they first arrived they did not see any signs of a fire.
Upon further investigation they discovered a fire in a first floor apartment that was being contained to one room because of a sprinkler system.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation but officials say this incident highlights the importance of building sprinkler systems.
If not for the sprinklers several apartments would have been damaged and residents displaced.
