Hoffman Estates fire officials are investigating what caused an attic fire in a two-story home at 1680 Jefferson Road.
The fire department was called to the scene at 3:20 p.m. Saturday after someone reported smoke coming from the house.
No one was home at the time, and no injuries were reported, fire officials said.
The house sustained fire damage to the second floor and roof, with minor smoke damage on the second floor, officials said. Damage was estimated at $35,000.
In all, 23 firefighters from four different departments helped extinguish the blaze.
The house did have working smoke detectors, but it did not have automatic sprinklers, fire officials said.
