The Framingham fire and building departments are offering building owners a chance to have their properties inspected to help improve their safety.
The inspections are being offered after the April 11 fire at the Jefferson Hills Apartment complex where more than 100 residents from the 100 units were left homeless. The building predated safety codes and had no sprinklers.
The new inspections are designed for those who own buildings built before modern safety codes went into effect, assistant Fire Chief John Magri said.
The inspections will result in recommendations, which are nonbinding, he said.
“This initiative will allow us to work cooperatively with property owners to improve fire-safety measures within their properties,” Magri said. “Creating a safer environment benefits the entire community.”
A member of the Fire Department and Building Department will conduct the inspections, which will include a checklist of items they are looking for. They will then present recommendations to building owners.
“As with many of the other multi-residential buildings in town with as many as 100 units, these buildings all predate the Massachusetts State Building Code, which was promulgated in 1975,” said Building Commissioner Michael Foley.
Interested building owners can call 508-532-5930 to set up an appointment.
