ZEPHYRHILLS – Lennar Homes’ appeal of Zephyrhills’ law requiring sprinklers in new construction has been postponed until May 19.

The Miami-based developer, which is one of the nation’s largest homebuilders, is challenging the rules. They would require Lennar to install sprinklers in the 250-unit town house development it is building on Eiland Boulevard.

The company claims it should be exempt from the new rules because its project was approved before Zephyrhills passed them in September.

The law requires new residential and commercial projects with more than 5,000 square feet of space to install fire sprinkler systems.

Existing businesses are required to install the systems if they renovate their buildings, and when buildings are expanded or converted to accommodate certain types of business.

Meeting Tuesday night, Zephyrhills city council members asked Lennar for more information and tabled its appeal to May 19. The council will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. to discuss the matter.
